A North European carved and gilt mirror
A fine early 19th century South German carved and gilt pier mirror in the neo-classical style, headed with a carved depiction of the goddess Ceres resting on a border of egg and dart flanked by lion's masks, the frame decorated with fruiting vines finished in two tones of gilding with a carved pearl border.
In the manner of Peter Schmuckert (1765 - 1841)
Peter Schmuckert was from Mannheim in Southwestern Germany. Trained as a gilder, he set up his workshop in 1787 and bought out the Elector of Mainz's silvering machines and mirror factory. His use of neo-classical elements in his furniture are particularly influenced by the designs of Joseph Beunat and his catalogue of architectural decorations in the Empire style, Recueil des dessins d'ornements d'architecture, 1816.
