A James Powell & Sons threaded glass vase
A James Powell & Sons threaded glass vase
A James Powell & Sons threaded glass vase, pat. no. 1211, the undulating surface decorated with evenly spaced delicate horizontal threads in blue on a flint ground, designed by Harry Powell.
In 1834, James Powell, a wine merchant and entrepreneur, acquired the Whitefriars glassworks, off Fleet Street, London. He and his sons quickly became pioneers, developing new techniques and securing lucrative patents. In 1923 they moved the factory to Tudor Road, Wealdstone, in Harrow. In 1962, the firm was renamed Whitefriars Glass Ltd., harking back to the original site that had been a monastery of the Carmelite Fathers, whose white habits earned the monks the nickname 'White Friars'.
