A rare pair of late 18th century painted shrine doors depicting a seated Mahasiddha in a jungle cave, watched by two tigers and their cub, the long-haired ascetic wearing a meditation belt and surrounded by various objects for the performance of mystical rituals, the tigers beside a river with a landscape beyond.
Tempera on cloth, laid on wood.
Items of Tibetan furniture consisted of portable storage chests, reading and writing tables, offering cabinets, portable shrines and altars to house Buddhist icons. Constructed of the native timber, panels were often set in with an overall effect of coffering, the joints doweled and with connective pegs to allow the doors to swing open.
