An ingenious mid 19th century mahogany reading table, stamped C. Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford Street, London, with a serial number 15005, the sliding rectangular mahogany top on a turned gun barrel column with a telescopic mechanism, on boldly carved pedestal base, supported on an elongated concave quadripartite base, the turned feet with the original brass castors.

Charles Hindley & Sons, 32 Berners Street acquired the cabinet-makers, Miles & Edwards, 134 Oxford Street, in 1844. Originally a carpet and rug business, they produced reliable, well-made pieces of household furniture and secured many prestigious commissions. Henry Miles and John Edwards had established their shop in 1822 and supplied several country houses, including Burton Constable with gilt furniture 'carved in the style of Louis Quatorze'.
