A pair of mahogany open bookcases
1076
A fine pair of Irish mahogany bookcases of narrow proportions and good rich colour, each stamped with the reference number 23090, attributed to the Dublin cabinet-maker, Gillingtons, the frieze of finely figured mahogany veneer, the adjustable shelves flanked by half Solomonic columns, each resting on block pedestal base.
The brothers George and Samuel Gillington produced furniture of the highest quality and design between 1815 and 1838. They traded from premises in Abbey Street, Dublin, at the same time as the other celebrated Dublin cabinet-maker, Mack and Gibton. George Gillington begged it "to be observed that his house is in the NARROW PART of Abbey Str" (D. Fitzgerald, "Dublin Directories and Trade Labels". Furniture History, 1985, p266.)
